Notes Of The Day June 22nd 2012

Just some notes for the day:

• Tim Thomas has waived his NMC. It was set to expire on July 1st. Teams just on the cap floor may be interested in his services. However, it will not affect his decision on returning.
• Keith Yandle is in play, and teams such as the New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues are involved, and players like Brandon Dubinsky are being named in return.
• According to Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: As for Nash trade? Howson said no offers are close. "They have a ways to go yet."
• Renaud Lavoie of RDS is reporting that the Philadelphia Flyers are trying to move up in the draft. The Anaheim Ducks' 6th overall pick is being named.
• According to @NHLWiki the Ottawa Senators are now the front runners for Columbus Blue Jackets' Rick Nash with the offering being Ben Bishop, Mika Zibanejad, and Nick Foligno. 
• The 2013 Draft will take place in New Jersey and Philadelphia in 2014.
• According to Team 1200 in Ottawa, the last issue before the Rich Nash deal is done, is budget.
• Swiss star Damien Brunner has signed a one year deal with the Detroit Red Wings.

Brad Stuart Traded

Brad Stuart has been traded from the Detroit Red Wings to the San Jose Sharks. In exchange the Red Wings recieve a conditional pick in 2014.

This is a great move for Stuart as he gets to stay closer with his family on the west coast. I will continue to update you guys with the condition and the round of the picks.

Update:
4:49 To my understanding right now it is Andrew Miller and Condtional 7th Rounder in 2014. I also believe it is the ability to sign him.

Nick Lidstrom retires.

A sure 1st ballot Hall Of Famer has called it a career. The prolific Nick Lidstrom has decided to call it a career after 20 seasons, all with the Detroit Red Wings. This is a huge loss for not only the Red Wings community, but for the hockey community as a whole. Lidstrom's departure will create a large defensive hole in Detroit's defensive corps and a need for a captain Motown.

Lidstrom set to retire.

After 20 years of playing on the blue line, Nicklas Lidstrom has decided to call it a career. They 42 year-old is expected to make his announcement this Thursday. He has played in 12 All-Star Games and has tallied 1,142 points. He got his first career hat trick last year. He finished with a career plus-minus of 450.

Even though it is not officially confirmed, it is widely believed that Lidstrom has decided to call it a career. All mainstream media outlets are reporting that he has called it career. Even Red Wings scout Hakan Andersson has confirmed it to Sportsblad that he will be hanging up the skates.

We will find out tomorrow about the future.

Wild, Penguins, Canadiens, Red Wings All Interested in Brunner

The Minnesota Wild, Pittsburgh Penguins, Montreal Canadiens, and the Detroit Red Wings are all intersted in Swiss international Damien Brunner. The forward scored 60 points in 45 games for Zug in the NLA. This is eliteprospects.com 's analysis of Brunner,"A slick offensive forward who can shoot as well as pass the puck. Has great wheels and hands. Plays a gritty game. (EP)"

Does this warrant Suspension/Penalty?

During the Flyers/Red Wings game, Flyers forward Jakub Voracek was handeling the puck when Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall absolutely destroys him. Does this warrant suspension?

Opinions:
Alson: No, Voracek's head is down trying to race down the ice. He's not looking up so he doesn't know what's in his way and Kronwall never leaves his feet and doesn't deliberately aim for his head. So in my books, fair game.
Kyle: Yes because Kronwall knew that the area of impact would be around the head area and he did nothing to change it. Although Voracek kept his head down, I agree with the commentators that Kronwall was aiming for Voracek's head.
Ronnie: NOT EVEN CLOSE TO A SUSPENSION. First of all his head was down, look up bro. Second that dude who hit him didn't even jump. I think it deserved a major though cause the elbow was at his face and that's not allowed.

Todd Bertuzzi re-signs

The Red Wings have resigned Todd Bertuzzi to a two year $4.4 Million  contract extension. It will be a $2.2 Million / year.

3 Team trade.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have traded F Steve Downie to the Colorado Avalanche. In return, the Colorado Avalanche gave up F Kyle Quincey. Lastly, Quincey has been traded to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for D Sebastien Piche and a 1st Round Pick in 2012.

Steve Downie is a gritty 2nd or 3rd liner that can fight, grit, and score every so often. He is a pending UFA earning $1.85Million this year.

Kyle Quincey is talented 2nd line defenseman that is good all around ability. He can score and do it all, but is inconsistent at times. If he becomes consistent, the Red Wings win this trade for sure.

Sebastien Piche is a projected depth defenseman that has a good slap shot, and ok defensive skills. I expect him to be a minor leaguer all his career.

Winners:
Wexler: In my opinion the winner was Tampa because they are adding more and more picks to go along with their already youthful team. Also adding a young defenseman, Sebastien Piche who is currently playing in the AHL but has some potential. Also I do not think that Kyle Quincey will make a big impact on Detroit during their playoff run.

Mahbod: I believe that the Colorado Avalanche won in this deal. They have a decent defensive core including players such as Eric Johnson, Shane O'Brien and Ryan O'Byrne. The Avalanche are in 11th place in the West, but only 3 points out of the playoffs and with the addition of Steve Downie -a grinder who also lights up the score board- they have a much higher chance of making the playoffs, because now they have stacked offense. With Matt Duchene, Paul Stastny, Peter Mueller, Milan Hejduk, Gabe Landeskog and Steve Downie, not only do I think that they will make the playoffs, but they are probably going to have a deep run too.

Kyle: Red Wings because Quincey adds scoring to their defence. Downie is really only used as an enforcer and the first round pick of Detroit will be low in the draft because they are leading the Western Conference.

Ty Conklin Waived

As we reported first yesterday, Ty Conklin has been waived by the Detroit Red Wings.

1:06 Rumor - The Detroit Red Wings have spoken to the Buffalo Sabres about Paul Gaustad and/or Brad Boyes. The Red Wings are only willing to part with picks in return.

1:08 Rumor - The St. Louis Blues are having continually discussions with the Montreal Canadiens, names have included Gill, Kostitsyn. No word on what the St. Louis Blues are willing to give back in return. Habs GM Pierre Gauthier is waiting till the trade deadline until making any big moves.

1:08 Rumor/Confirmed (Hearing mixed things...) -  The San Jose Sharks, Vancouver Canucks, and Chicago Blackhawks have all either reconsidered or withdrawn offers for the Montreal Canadien's Travis Moen due to Moen's injury.

1:11 Confirmed - Andy Sutton has signed a one year contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers. Details to come. This could mean he is off the trade market or is a signal for a sign and trade with another team...

2013 Winter Classic.

The 2013 Winter Classic has been announced. It will be the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Detroit Red Wings. The game will be played in Detroit's Comerica Park. The field will be converted in to a rink just like the one at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Expect a lot of Toronto Maple Leafs jerseys to be in attendance due to the close driving distance.

2013 Winter Classic. Toronto Maple Leafs vs Detroit Red Wings?

Lots of rumors have been circulating about the Wings and the Leafs in next year's Winter Classic. According to Ansar Khan of MLive confirms that the deal with the NHL, Red Wings, and the Leafs have been finalized. I spoke to one of my sources and he has stated that he would be "very suprised" if the Wings and Leafs aren't in next year's Classic. However, Lance Horby of the Toronto Sun makes a very good point. The University of Michigan's stadium doesn't allow alcohol in to the stadium and the beer concessions are often the largest money maker after the ticket sales. This would be perfect for the people of Detroit who have been struggling since the 2008 reccession. This would provide lots of jobs for the people of Detroit and the people of Toronto will flock down to watch this in bunches.

Christmas Special: Detroit Red Wings

Team Wishlist: Jimmy Howard getting some fame. This was a topic on TheScore.com 's Backhand Shelf. Host Rob Pizzo highlighted Howard's stats, he's the league leader in wins, a nice .932 save percentage, 3 shutouts and  a sexy 1.82 GAA. He's a great goalie statwise, yet we don't think of him as a top 5 goalie. How come? This just doesn't make sense. You'd have to think the Red Wings wish that they'd want Howard to get more fame.

Nicklas Lidstrom: Have the announcers call him Nicklas not Dicklas (its immature ,but its really funny :) ) Also, I can bet you Lidstrom wished he got his left nut back..

NHL Team in Markham. Is it possible?

Recent rumblings from the hockey world have been targeting a new area. Markham, Ontario. Is a NHL team possible there? Yes. Would it be sustainable? No. The Toronto Maple Leafs are the most valuable team in the NHL according to Forbes Magazine. As much as us fans want to think otherwise, the NHL is a business. The main purpose of a business is to make money. A new NHL team in Markham would hurt the sales of tickets in Detroit, Ottawa, Buffalo, and Toronto especially. The Toronto Marlies would almost automatically have to relocate due to the impossible situation to make money. The Toronto Maple Leafs would ask for an INSANE amount for a relocation fee. Sources estimate it to be at least $60 Million (just like Winnipeg) and $20 per ticket. This circumstances make it impossible for a team to survive.

What would a new team in Markham do socially? Markham is a rapidly expanding area with a lot of new immigrants coming in each year. A team in Markham would show them a part of Canadian culture. Something we hold dearly to our hearts, hockey. Even though there are social benefits the economic worries are just too much to overlook. After all, the NHL is a business.
