Notes of The Day May 23rd 2012

• Derek Dorestt has signed a three year contract extension with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was expected to be an RFA, but with the sudden turn of events will not have to go through the hassle in the off-season. This season he has a career high 12 goals and and eight assists along with an NHL high 235 PIMs.
• Blues Assistant Coach Scott Mellanby has left the organization to pursue other career opportunities. No word on his replacement.
• Speculation: @bobmckenzie is reporting that he wouldn't be surprised if he left to join the Habs.
• Vancouver's AM980 has tweeted that he COULD be Vancouver bound?
• @jprutherford is reporting that possible replacements for Mellanby are the following: Tom Renney, Jeff Brown, and Gary Agnew.
• Mikael Granlund has offically joined the Minnesota Wild.
• Contract Terms: 3Yr/$2.7Mill with an annual signing bonus of $90K

• Luke Richardson has decided to join the AHL affiliate of the Ottawa Senators as their head coach. He was already the Asssistant Coach of the big league club, but he will now get a promotion to the Head Coaching job in Binghamton.

NHL Tampering, Award Finalists, Luongo Trade Rumors, and More!

Quick Notes from the day:

• Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo has told reporters that he will waive a NTC if the right situation comes.
• There are reports from multiple people that he has submitted a list with teams he would be willing to waive his NTC for. There are also reports that this list does not exist.
• @Aportzline is saying that the Blue Jackets may be interested in Luongo, but his monster deal is making him a last ditch resort.
• His contract: $5.33 Million cap hit all the way to 2021-2022 and his clause is as follows, NTC (player can supply five-team trade list following final game of 2013-14, valid through July 15, 2014; if player does not submit trade list at that time, team can request a five-team trade list following final game of 2017-18 season, valid through Sept. 1, 2018). If player submitted a trade list in 2014 and was not moved, team loses right to request trade list in 2018. (Source: Capgeek.com)
• Ray Shero is not sure he can re-sign both Jordan Staal and Sidney Crosby and feels that the CBA and their willingness to stay will be a determining factor if they can be re-signed. He also gave a vote of confidence to coach Dan Bylsma saying  “I think Dan Bylsma is the right coach for our team”.
• @dchesnokov reports that Leafs' Mikhail Grabovski gave an interview to goals.by saying that there was another offer besides the offer from the Leafs he eventually accepted. 
• We are pretty sure that the offer did not come from an NHL team due to the tampering rules in place. Our only explanation is it is from a KHL team.
• @dchesnokov is reporting maybe Minsk? or he said too much....

Ben Bishop to the Ottawa Senators

It is believed right now that St. Louis has a deal in place with the Ottawa Senators that would send G Ben Bishop to the Ottawa Senators for an unknown return. He is a Group VI Free Agent this year. If he plays 15+ games, this year in the NHL, he will be a UFA if he plays less than 15, he will be a RFA. The main problem apparently, is that GM Bryan Murray wants to sign him to an extension before the trade goes through.

Bishop is a starting NHL goalie playing in the minor leagues due to the amazing season of both Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliot. All the people I have spoke to believe that Bishop has star quality. His big frame, (6'7) allows him to cover more space. Bishop also has good angles and knows where to stand.

THE OTTAWA SENATORS HAVE TRADED A CONDITIONAL SECOND ROUND PICK TO THE ST. LOUIS BLUES IN EXCHANGE FOR G BEN BISHOP. THE OTTAWA SENATORS HAVE ALSO RE-SIGNED BISHOP TO A ONE YEAR ONE WAY CONTRACT.

Winners:
Alson: Ottawa won this one. Bishop will be a star in this league.It depends on the condition though and what will the other pick be.

Wexler: Ottawa because they needed a goalie to cover in for Anderson. The Sens picked up a really underrated goalie in Bishop because of St. Louis' other star goalies. I think Bishop will lead the Sens into a deep round in the playoffs.

Kyle: Ottawa for sure, since they are high up on the Eastern Conference, the pick will be a late one. In Bishop, they got 2 NHL future all star goaltenders in Bishop and Lehner. In my mind, the Blues could've gotten him for a first round or another prospect.

Mahbod: I actually think St. Louis won. They can use that 2nd round pick to get a John-Michael Liles level player that can boost their play. Ben Bishop is only currently a minor's goalie and Ottawa has countless backup goalies including Auld, Lehner, Leclaire and Mike Brodeur. Ben Bishop just falls in. Although Ben Bishop is expected to be really good; a second round pick is a nice tradeable asset.

We don't want to bombard you with posts, so we're going to have one big posts of a bunch of rumors. It's pretty much a well known fact that the teams are going to be calling like crazy this weekend.

So let's start the fun!

1:06 Rumor - The Detroit Red Wings have spoken to the Buffalo Sabres about Paul Gaustad and/or Brad Boyes. The Red Wings are only willing to part with picks in return.

1:08 Rumor - The St. Louis Blues are having continually discussions with the Montreal Canadiens, names have included Gill, Kostitsyn. No word on what the St. Louis Blues are willing to give back in return. Habs GM Pierre Gauthier is waiting till the trade deadline until making any big moves.

1:08 Rumor/Confirmed (Hearing mixed things...) -  The San Jose Sharks, Vancouver Canucks, and Chicago Blackhawks have all either reconsidered or withdrawn offers for the Montreal Canadien's Travis Moen due to Moen's injury.

1:11 Confirmed - Andy Sutton has signed a one year contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers. Details to come. This could mean he is off the trade market or is a signal for a sign and trade with another team...

2:35 (sorry for the lack of posting. Just no rumors for me to write about...) Rumor - NYR are interested in Hal Gill as well.

Is Ben Bishop's time in St. Louis done?

Ben Bishop's name has been thrown around a lot  in trade talks. Young goalies, even if unproven have been a hot commodity this year. Players like Josh Harding and Johnathan Bernier have become players of high price. With the extension of Brian Elliot, and the long contract of Jaroslav Halak, Ben Bishop doesn't have much of an opportunity to be a NHL goalie in St. Louis. What happens between now and trade deadline date remains to be seen. If he doesn't get traded, and becomes a free agent, this is where it gets interesting. If Bishop plays 17 or less games in the NHL this season, he becomes a UFA, but if he plays 17 or more, he becomes a RFA. This is sure to get interesting.

St Louis Blues. Suprise team of the year?

St Louis Blues, they are the tied for the league lead in points. Who would have guessed that near the mid point of the season, they would be this good? Personally we give most of the props to the goaltending duo of Brian Elliot and Jaroslav Halak. They have played tremendously well and have led the charge for the team. Elliot is finally playing like the goalie Ottawa wanted him to play like. However, not all of the credit can be given to the goalie. T.J. Oshie has been playing superb this year with 14 goals. He is a leader on this team and credit must me given to them.

Christmas Wishlist: St. Louis Blues

The Blues have already received an early christmas present with the return of David Perron who before returning, missed the last 97 games, but what other presents are the Blues looking for?

• Stay Healthy- I don't think I can emphasize how key this really is, especially for a team that has been plagued by injuries the past 2 seasons.  The Blues (as mentioned above) now have a healthy David Perron, and only 3 key players remain injured (McDonald, Huskins, and Crombeen).  If the Blues remain healthy, they are as dangerous as any team in the Western conference.

• Get the PP going- The Blues powerplay has been dreadful this season, and its the main reason why they are not at the top of the Western conference.  The Blues sit dead last in the entire league with a pathetic 10.4% conversion rating on the PP.  Under Hitchcock the Blues have remained inconsistent on the PP execution, but in recent games they appear to be getting more chances and eventually those chances will convert to goals.

• Finalize deal with a new owner- Whether that new owner will be Matthew Hulsizer or someone different, this is a huge step for the Blues organization moving forward.  The Blues are playing their best hockey in, well, a long time.  So its great to imagine the kind of record they could post with the funds to sign another "big name" player.  The deadline for Hulsizer to buy the club is December 31st, and its speculated that a deal will be done before than so this could truly be a "Christmas present" for the Notes.

• T.J. Oshie remains consistent- T.J. Oshie has arguably been the most consistent Blues player of late with 9 goals, 10 assists, and 19 pts. in this still young season.  If he keeps up his tenacious checking and his stellar puck handling then he will make the Blues that much better.

The Blues have a lot to be thankful for, and with the addition of these "gifts" they could be one of the most dominant teams in the league.  Hopefully the holiday season remains kind to the Blues as they embark on their journey to the Stanley Cup Playoffs and the ultimate prize, Lord Stanley's Cup.

David Perron, Welcome Back!

The last time David Perron was on the ice was November 4th 2010. He was on the ice as Joe Thornton had hit him and he had a concussion. He didn't play in an 95 straight NHL games. Until tonight. December 3rd 2011 against the Chicago Blackhawks. When he stepped on to the ice, the thunderous roar of the crowd was unmistakable, David Perron was back. It was Perronmas!

First game, first shot. IT'S A GOALLLL! Watching this I said to myself David Perron, Welcome Back!
