• Formal CBA will start very quickly after Wendesday's NHLPA meetings.
• @APortzline was reporting that the Blue Jackets were offered all of the New York Islanders' picks to move up two spots in the draft.
• It looked like Nash to Ottawa was a done deal, but apparently, Ottawa is not on Nash's list and is holding up the deal.
• So much for the Pavlec going to KHL rumors. He's signed a new deal for 5 years worth $19.5M. According to Bob McKenzie of TSN it breaks down to $3.25M for year one, $3.5M for year two, $3.75M for year three, $4.25M for year four, and $4.75M for year five. This is interesting seeing that there were rumors the KHL offered him $5M tax free...

NHL Schedule Announced

The NHL has released its schedule for the upcoming year. It all starts on October 11th with the Habs/Sens and Flyers/Bruins. There is only one Stanley Cup Final rematch this year and it goes down on February 3rd 2013

• Is there a snag on the deal for the Phoenix Coyotes? There are rumors out there that the Goldwater Institute, yes the same one as last time, could be suing to block the deal. Byron Schlomach of the Goldwater Institute said, " the proposed management fee to the team is too high, because comparable facilities garner around $10 million. That could be reason for the group to sue, he said." in an interview with Bloomberg.
• Michael Murphy formerly of the Carolina Hurricanes and the Charlotte Checkers has joined an KHL team. He has not told anyone which KHL team he has signed with. In 37GP this year, he won 18 and had a SV% of .908.

Quick Notes from the day:

• Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo has told reporters that he will waive a NTC if the right situation comes.
• There are reports from multiple people that he has submitted a list with teams he would be willing to waive his NTC for. There are also reports that this list does not exist.
• @Aportzline is saying that the Blue Jackets may be interested in Luongo, but his monster deal is making him a last ditch resort.
• His contract: $5.33 Million cap hit all the way to 2021-2022 and his clause is as follows, NTC (player can supply five-team trade list following final game of 2013-14, valid through July 15, 2014; if player does not submit trade list at that time, team can request a five-team trade list following final game of 2017-18 season, valid through Sept. 1, 2018). If player submitted a trade list in 2014 and was not moved, team loses right to request trade list in 2018. (Source: Capgeek.com)
• Ray Shero is not sure he can re-sign both Jordan Staal and Sidney Crosby and feels that the CBA and their willingness to stay will be a determining factor if they can be re-signed. He also gave a vote of confidence to coach Dan Bylsma saying  “I think Dan Bylsma is the right coach for our team”.
• @dchesnokov reports that Leafs' Mikhail Grabovski gave an interview to goals.by saying that there was another offer besides the offer from the Leafs he eventually accepted. 
• We are pretty sure that the offer did not come from an NHL team due to the tampering rules in place. Our only explanation is it is from a KHL team.
• @dchesnokov is reporting maybe Minsk? or he said too much....

Eastern Conference

#1 NY Rangers vs #8 Ottawa Senators

Alson: Rangers in 5. Look it just comes down to Henrik vs Anderson. Karlsson and Spezza are great players are one of the only reasons why they are even IN the playoffs. However, there's not much in the tank left for them in my opinion.

Kyle:

Geoffrey: Rangers in 5. Anderson and Bishop may be decent but the combination of King Henrik and Biron is way better. Karlsson and Spezza might be able to steal a game for the Sens but Alfredsson is going to have one disappointing last playoff series.

Ronnie:

Marcus: Rangers in 6.

#2 Boston Bruins vs #7 Washington Capitals
Alson:  Bruins in five. The Caps nearly missed the playoffs and the only reason why they were in the playoffs are because Ovie decided to step up his game. If he doesn't have the entire team step up, there's not much to dispute about.
Kyle:
Geoffrey: Bruins in six. The Caps are doing well right now with Ovechkin playing like a superstar and getting back Backstrom. But the rough and tough game of the Bruins will be too much for them. Watch Ovie get decked by Chara throughout the series.
Ronnie:
Marcus: Bruins in 7.

#3 Florida Panthers vs #6 New Jersey Devils
Alson: Florida in 7. Panthers have a suprising run this year and I feel that they will continue their miraculous run in the playoffs.
Kyle:
Geoffrey: Devils in 6. The Panthers magical run ends here. Even though Florida has a higher seed than the Devils, the Devils finished better overall. That's why I don't like that the top in the division gets an automatic top 3 seed. But Brodeur and the Devils will finished them off.
Ronnie:
Marcus: Devils in 6.


#4 Pittsburgh Penguins vs #5 Philadelphia Flyers

Alson: Pens in 5. I'm not going to lie. Pens are my team. I love the Penguins so i'm biased, not going to lie. Bryzgalov has been alright, and the Penguins are a lot deeper compared to the Flyers. The Flyers have Jagr and Giroux, but the Penguins have Fleury, Malkin, Crosby, and Letang. They are also a lot tougher with Joe Vitale and that's all the reasoning I need. 

Kyle:

Geoffrey: Pens in 7. Probably the best series to watch. Jagr coming home to Pittsburgh after spending most of his career there and defenitley will be a hotly contested game as evident from the April 1st game. Matt Cooke will be the most important player for the Pens because he'll need to be watching out for Crosby, Malkin and Staal and dealing with anybody who messes with these star players.

Ronnie:

Marcus: Flyers in 7.

Western Conference


#1 Vancouver Canucks vs #8 Los Angeles Kings

Alson: Kings in 5. This will shock a lot of people but I believe they can beat the Canucks. Quick is dialed in and ready to go. Carter and Richards are good only together, and with Doughty, I'm definately interested in this team. Also don't forget, Luongo has a history of choking up in the playoffs...

Kyle:

Geoffrey: Kings in 7. The Kings are starting to click together ever since acquiring Carter. Quick is a Vezina candidate and the Kings are up top in goals against. Even though the Kings aren't one of the highest scoring teams, they can still be the Canucks. Remember, offense wins the regular season, defense wins championships. 

Ronnie:
Marcus: Canucks in 5.

#2 St. Louis Blues vs #7 San Jose Sharks

Alson: Blues in 5. Blues have GREAT depth and great goaltending, and San Jose Sharks always chokes up in the playoffs, it just depends in first or second round. My money is on the first round.

Kyle:

Geoffrey: Blues in 6. The Sharks have never found their rhythm in the playoffs. the Blues have allowed the fewest goals in the history of the NHL and that's going to stand out in this matchup. But the depth of the Sharks will make this series a bit interesting.

Ronnie:

Marcus: Blues in 5.

#3 Phoenix Coyotes vs #6 Chicago Blackhawks

Alson: 'Yotes in 6. Smith has been playing great, and I feel that the 'Yotes are a lot more motivated than years before. I just have a gut feeling on this one...

Kyle:

Geoffrey: Hawks in 6. Smith has been riding a hot glove and he'll extend the series but Phoenix has been pretty lucky going from 8th to 3rd in the last few days because of the division playoff seed. When Chicago gets back Toews, watch out.

Ronnie:
Marcus: Hawks in 6.

#4 Nashville Predators vs #5 Detroit Red Wings

Alson: Preds in 6. Pekka Rinne. Simple as that. He is dangerous and the fact he's playing good even for him, this is something to be feared. Also, don't forget, the Red Wings are getting old...

Kyle:

Geoffrey: Red Wings in 5. The Red Wings are healthy and dangerous. Throughout the season, they've been crushed by injuries. If they didn't have injuries, they should have won the President's Trophy. The Preds really added depth to their lineup but they will be no match to the skills of the Red Wings. 

Ronnie:

Marcus: Preds in 7.

Playoff Teams decided

After yesterday's matchup, 16 teams have clinched playoff spots. It's been a long time since all the playoffs spots have been taken before the last day of the regular season. Here are the playoff teams in order of rankings.

The East standings are pretty much secured with only a Ottawa lost and Caps win on Saturday that could change the playoff matchups. The West however is more difficult because of the home-ice advantage situtation.
The Pacific Division is a mess with any of the three teams having the possibilities of taking the third seed. All in all, all 30 teams will see action Saturday. The game to watch will definitley be the Pens-Flyers game as it will be a preview of their playoff matchup and especially after the huge fiasco in their last meeting.

NHL Award Predictions.

From the team here, we just decided to choose the players we think deserve the following awards:


Hart Memorial Trophy:
Alson: My pick will be a surprise to a lot of people, but it goes for Claude Giroux of the Philadelphia Flyers gets my pick. After the trade of Richards and Carter, many people predicted that the Flyers would have horrible scoring, but he has done well offensively. To put it in perspective, Bryzgalov has had an "alright" year and with the Pronger out indefinitely, he has stepped up as well and deserves this award more than players like Lundqvist and Malkin.
Ronnie: I think its going to be probably Malkin because he's been carrying the team on his back for like forever.
Wexler:
Mahbod:
Geoffrey: Got to go with Evgeni Malkin. The past few years, the leading goal scorer or points leader normally gets it. Giroux had a good year but Malkin has been more dazzling, especially after the injury to Crosby. Lundqvist has some chance but he'll really need to tear up the league. He already has an award most likely, the Vezina.
Kyle: Malkin because he stepped up during Crosby's absence and basically led his team to where they are today. Now that Crosby is back, I expect Malkin's pace to slow down but nonetheless congrats to him for what he has done this season.


Norris Memorial Trophy:
Alson: Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators gets my pick. He has the 7th most points in the league. Even though he is gifted offensively, he is also defensively gifted as well. He is a +18 and has only 42 penalty minutes all season.
Ronnie: Shae Weber is amazing.

Wexler:
Mahbod:
Geoffrey: Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators obviously. If you used the number of points he's leading by for defensemen, you get another perfectly good defensemen. He's really one of the reasons why the Sens aren't last in the conference as they were predicted to be at the start of the year.
Kyle: There's really only one winner for this and its Erik Karlsson. He is one of the main reasons for Ottawa's resurgence this season. He improved his defence drastically (went from a very bad minus to positive this season) and is the future cornerstone of the franchise.


Jack Adams Award:
Alson: Ken Hitchcock of the St. Louis Blues. No one would have expected the Blues to be this good going into the playoffs. He has done tremendously well and this award, should be a no-brainer for him.
Ronnie: Ken hitchcock of the St. Louis Blues. Its a surprise that there doing so well.
Wexler:
Mahbod:
Geoffrey: Barry Trotz of the Nashville Predators. He's been coaching the Preds ever since they entered the NHL and they have come a long way. They have by far one of the youngest teams in the league yet they all play like their veterans. His team has been consistenly been getting 100 points for the past few year and this year is no different. The reason why I choose him is because he keeps his team focus even though there are major UFA (Ryan Suter) and RFA (Shea Weber) on their team. His roster has changed so many times yet he makes sure his team always has a chance to win.
Kyle: Ken Hitchcock because he changed the Blues into one of the top teams in the Western Conference. People didn't believe he was good and that the Blues would finish out of the playoffs but look at them now. On the verge of the President's trophy. Congrats to the Blues and good luck in the playoffs!




Calder Memorial Trophy:
Alson: Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorade Avalanches. It would have been Ryan Nugent-Hopkins but his injuries have hampered his chances. Landeskog has had 22 goals and 29 assists in 80 games. He has been Mr. Durable this year him dressing in all 80 games this year.
Ronnie: I don't like the rookies.
Wexler:
Mahbod:
Geoffrey: Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanches. Not only has he been putting up numbers, he knows his defensive responsibilities. Most rookies struggle in their own end normally but landeskog has shown none of it. He is the leader in plus/minus for the Avs which shows what a great future for the #2 pick last year.
Kyle: I can't decide this because there are so many good rookies this year! Landeskog, Matt Read, RNH are all great rookies who will be future NHL superstars.


Vezina Trophy:
Alson: Jon Quick will be my choice. I know many of you will disagree and think that King Henrik deserves this award, but don't forget what kind of players King Henrik has in front of him. Quick is a top 10 leader in all the categories and is one of the main reasons why the Kings are in a playoff seed.
Ronnie: Pekka Rine has the most wins. Enough said.
Wexler:
Mahbod:
Geoffrey: Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers. He has pushed his team to first in the Eastern conference and has been amazing in net. Competing in one of the toughest divisions this year, he has simply outperformed every other goalie out there. The fact that the Lundqvist has yet to let in 5 goals this year is completely crazy.
Kyle: Henrik Lundqvist because He stepped his game up from last season and is the main reason why the Rangers are first in the Eastern Conference. Some could say that the success of the Rangers could be allocated to the acquisition of Brad Richards but the main reason is because of Lundqvist and his amazing goaltending.


Selke Trophy:
Alson: Datsyuk. Every year he has no problem doing well. This year is no different. He's a solid three zone player. One of the best in the world. Plays D well and has a great +/- to back it up.
Ronnie:
Wexler:
Mahbod:
Geoffrey: I think Datsuyk is going to have a run for his money. Patrice Bergeron is my pick this year because he has truly been the all around player for the Bruins this year, especially after the lost of centremens like Horton and Peverley. He's great on the powerplay and the penalty kill and is on one of the hottest lines in the league. He knows his defensive responsibility, evident in his plus-minus which makes him a great two way player. There's a reason why Bergeron was picked for the 2010 Canadian Olympic team over Stamkos.

• University of Denver C Drew Shore has signed on with the Florida Panthers.
• University of Denver W Jason Zucker has signed on with the Minnesota Wild.
• He will report to the NHL club on Thursday.
• The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed University of Michigan G Shawn Hunwick to an entry level contract.
• He will report to the NHL club tonight and serve as Mike York's backup as Steve Mason took a puck to the mask during practice this morning.
• The Columbus Blue Jackets have also signed F Boone Jenner to a two year contract.
• F Spencer Abott, the leading scorer in NCAA has decided to leave the University of Maine and join the Toronto Maple Leafs on an one year entry level contract.
• He will play off the year in the Toronto Marlies.
• Western Michigan D Matt Tenneyson has decided to join the San Jose Sharks.
• The Ottawa Senators have signed University of Florida - Miami D Chris Wideman to a two year contract.
• The Buffalo Sabers have signed F Brian Flynn of the University of Maine to a contract.
• The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed F J.T. Brown from the University of Minnesota - Duluth to an two year entry level contract.
• He will report to the parent team and burn a year off of his contract by playing in the parent club.

• The Coyotes have signed St. Cloud State University G Mike Lee to a two year entry level deal.
• The Coyotes have also signed University of Michigan C Chris Brown to a three year entry level deal.

Evgeni Nabokov Re-Signs

Previously pending UFA goalie Evegeni Nabokov has re-signed with the New York Islanders for one more year at the price of $2.5 Million. He was expected to be a hot commodity this year when he would hit free agency. With many teams interested in a goalie, (Toronto, Tampa Bay, Columbus, Philadelphia, Chicago) this is a significant blow to the quality of goalies in free agency market.

Remaining goalies for this Free Agency that stand out include,

Cristobal Huet: Probably not coming back and certainly not his contract size.
Martin Brodeur: If he's returning its in New Jersey
Dwayne Roloson: His age is a large problem.
Antero Niitymaki: Probably the best backup available left.
Thomas Vokoun: Will probably sign on with Washington for another year.
Jonas Gustavsson: If he does not re-sign with the Maple Leafs, he will be a hot commodity.
Martin Biron: Seems content in New York.
Josh Harding: Will be a goalie highly sought after.

Quick News From Around The League

• No official confirmation but the buzz around the league is that Alexander Radulov has been granted permission to go back to the NHL. There is also talk that he would not need to clear waivers before re-joining the Predators.

• The NHL's GM confirm and accept the Hybrid icing rule. The Hybrid rule is that when the forward and defender are chasing after a puck, instead of the back line it will be at the face off dot. If the defenseman is winning at the faceoff dot, it will be an icing call, but if the forward is winning, the game continues. 

• Sean Avery told the New York Post that he is indeed retiring after this his current contract ends, which is this season, "No, that wasn't a joke, yes I'm retiring at end of season and its ok"

NHLPA Realignment Rejection

Yesterday, the NHLPA rejected the proposal that was put forward to split the league up into four conferences. Instead, they would prefer if the league stayed the same. Here are some reactions that have been shown since the rejection:

NHL: Obviously, they'd be disappointed that the proposal wasn't agreed on.

NHL Accountant: They have to be beside themselves right now. This move would have been a great move economically with the amount of money spent on airfare being dramatically because you don't have those expensive flights from Columbus to LA as often.

NHL Board of Directors: Reaction from Jimmy Devellano was interesting. He was visibly upset and disappointed as well. He serves as the Senior Vice President of the Detroit Red Wings. His main complain was that teams in the middle like Detroit has to travel to places like LA, Vancouver, Phoenix twice a year and it is tough on his players. Games would be finished at 1 A.M. Detroit time and the players would be exhausted.

NHL Players: They're disappointed, they vouched for this because of the easier schedule and the less travelling. The teams in the middle like St. Louis, Columbus, Detroit, the players overwhelmingly wanted this realignment to go through.

NHLPA: Ah the most important people, NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr released a statement explaining why the NHLPA did not approve the change, " Two substantial Player concerns emerged: (1) whether the new structure would result in increased and more onerous travel; and (2) the disparity in chances of making the playoffs between the smaller and larger divisions." 

Fans: Fans in the central areas were hoping this would go  through so fans don't have to stay up till midnight or 1 AM just to watch a game.

Blogger: Dammit, so close, I was hoping to see the sponsorship for the conference names, Apple Conference, I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Conference, and Blackberry Conference because you know RIM likes to put their name in everything...
