Does this warrant Suspension/Penalty?

During the Flyers/Red Wings game, Flyers forward Jakub Voracek was handeling the puck when Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall absolutely destroys him. Does this warrant suspension?

Opinions:
Alson: No, Voracek's head is down trying to race down the ice. He's not looking up so he doesn't know what's in his way and Kronwall never leaves his feet and doesn't deliberately aim for his head. So in my books, fair game.
Kyle: Yes because Kronwall knew that the area of impact would be around the head area and he did nothing to change it. Although Voracek kept his head down, I agree with the commentators that Kronwall was aiming for Voracek's head.
Ronnie: NOT EVEN CLOSE TO A SUSPENSION. First of all his head was down, look up bro. Second that dude who hit him didn't even jump. I think it deserved a major though cause the elbow was at his face and that's not allowed.

Sidney Crosby Cleared for Contact

Sidney Crosby has recently been cleared for contact in practice by the Penguin's medical staff. However, there is no timetable for his return to the NHL.

Crosby revealed that he had been symptom free for a few days but he reminded reporters that practice with contact was the first step and he still has a long way to go before returning to the Penguins.

“I just want to make sure I get through these days fine and that would be a great decision to make if I get to that point,” Crosby added.

He mused about his return on Sunday but he didn't guarantee it because it would be "total guesswork."

The NHL superstar has only played 8 games this season, but recorded 12 points, including 4 points in his first game. Getting Crosby back for the postseason would boost and help the Penguins a lot and make them favourites to win the Cup.

In the past 15 months, Crosby's career has been jeopardized because of multiple concussions and Post Concussion Syndrome, the first one happening in January 2011 during the 2011 Winter Classic. He returned on November 21 and played for 8 games before that fateful night where he got elbowed by David Krejci and his own teammate Chris Kunitz. The Penguins initially thought he wouldn't be out for long but it has been 3 months since then.

Crosby has been looking for other injuries that might have induced the symptoms and while in Los Angeles, the doctors found a soft tissue neck problem which they resolved and Crosby said that he felt better.

“The neck stuff certainly helped,” Crosby said. “With this stuff, it’s always trial and error. There’s no specific treatment that everybody knows is going to work, but you try to do what’s related to what you feel. I definitely felt like I saw some improvement in my neck, with getting that loose. Was it everything? I don’t know. But it certainly helped, so that’s something I’ll continue to do and stay on.”

Mikhail Grabovski Re-Signs

The Toronto Maple Leafs announce that they have agreed on a 5 year $5.5AAV deal. The pending UFA has enjoyed a rebirth of his careers after coming to the Leafs. He is now put in a group of players like Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, and Brian Gionta. This contract will add a new amount of pressure, and he will have to perform at this a Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf calibre to not be scrutinized by the rabid Toronto media.

Marty Turco Signs with NHL Team.

Marty Turco has signed with the Boston Bruins for a one year contract. Per team terms, financial numbers will not be released at this time. He has also been placed on waivers, the fact that he has been signed after the trade deadline means he will be ineligible for the 2012 playoffs. He last played for EC Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian First Division this year.

Opinion Piece: Should NHL teams stop the affiliation with AHL teams?

5 years ago, when teams wanted to place a player in to the minors, only one team was to get them, the one they have a minor league affiliation with. However, nowadays, even though there are still contracts with affiliates, it seems like it doesn't matter anymore. Just the other day, the San Jose sent goalie Alex Stalock to Peoria, even though the Sharks are affiliated with Worchester Sharks. Does it even matter now? I feel that if NHL teams can freely assign players to any AHL would be largely beneficial to the development of players. Teams will assign their players to weaker teams so their players will get more playing time. There will be a parity amongst teams. It makes every game that much more competitive. Isn't that what the league, teams, players, and agents want? The best for the players. Just scrap the affiliation, let any teams assign anywhere.

Carlyle Adds an Assistant Coach to Toronto

Newly appointed head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs Randy Carlyle has finished remodelling his new bench.

On Sunday, the Toronto Maple Leafs officially announced the signing of Dave Farrish. He was part of the coaching team with Anaheim that won the Stanley Cup in 2007. The other assistant coaches that Carlyle wanted and got were Scott Gordon and Greg Cronin.

Farrish spent 7 seasons with Carlyle in Anaheim before they cleaned house and fired him in December. The 55 year old former defenceman brings more than 21 seasons of coaching in various leagues such as the AHL, IHL (International Hockey League), and ECHL.
