Notes Of The Day June 25th 2012

  • Formal CBA will start very quickly after Wendesday's NHLPA meetings.
  • @APortzline was reporting that the Blue Jackets were offered all of the New York Islanders' picks to move up two spots in the draft.
  • It looked like Nash to Ottawa was a done deal, but apparently, Ottawa is not on Nash's list and is holding up the deal.
  • So much for the Pavlec going to KHL rumors. He's signed a new deal for 5 years worth $19.5M. According to Bob McKenzie of TSN it breaks down to $3.25M for year one, $3.5M for year two, $3.75M for year three, $4.25M for year four, and $4.75M for year five. This is interesting seeing that there were rumors the KHL offered him $5M tax free...

Notes Of The Day June 22nd 2012

Just some notes for the day:

  • Tim Thomas has waived his NMC. It was set to expire on July 1st. Teams just on the cap floor may be interested in his services. However, it will not affect his decision on returning.
  • Keith Yandle is in play, and teams such as the New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues are involved, and players like Brandon Dubinsky are being named in return.
  • According to Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: As for Nash trade? Howson said no offers are close. "They have a ways to go yet."
  • Renaud Lavoie of RDS is reporting that the Philadelphia Flyers are trying to move up in the draft. The Anaheim Ducks' 6th overall pick is being named.
  • According to @NHLWiki the Ottawa Senators are now the front runners for Columbus Blue Jackets' Rick Nash with the offering being Ben Bishop, Mika Zibanejad, and Nick Foligno.
  • The 2013 Draft will take place in New Jersey and Philadelphia in 2014.
  • According to Team 1200 in Ottawa, the last issue before the Rich Nash deal is done, is budget.
  • Swiss star Damien Brunner has signed a one year deal with the Detroit Red Wings.

Oilers taking Murray?

There are talks everywhere saying that instead of taking consensus #1 prospect Nail Yakupov they may pick Ryan Murray instead. This is because the Oilers have a lot of blue chip forwards such as Nugent-Hopkins, Eberle, and Hall, but do not have any defence prospects. Drafting Murray would give them an NHL defenceman that is young, good, and a good core for the future.

Bobrovsky Traded to Columbus for 3 Draft Picks

Sergei Bobrovsky has been traded from the Philadelphia Flyers to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for 3 draft picks including a 2nd round draft pick (45th overall) and the 117th overall (originally belonging to Phoenix.) This should solve the franchise goalie problem Columbus was having. CBJ played five goalies last year including Curtis McEllhinney, Steve Mason, Curtis Sanford and Allen York.

Bobrovsky Traded.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired G Sergei Bobrovsky from the Columbus Blue Jackets for draft picks. More to come.

Keith Yandle Available?

There are talks everywhere from Darren Millard to Eklund are all saying that Coyotes Keith Yandle is available for trade. Darren Millard is also reporting a deal is almost close. However, it is not currently known who would he bring back or where he would go. However, I personally believe that since it's so close to the Draft, if he is to be traded, it will be on the Draft Floor.

More To Come.

Scott Arniel going to San Jose?

According to Roger Millions of Sportsnet up in Canada, there are talks that former Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Scott Arniel is about to join the San Jose Sharks. Before this rumor, he was also rumored to be on the shortlist of Head Coaches for the Manitoba Moose, the AHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks. This is an interesting story that we'll follow for sure! Keep it here for more!

NHL Schedule Announced

The NHL has released its schedule for the upcoming year. It all starts on October 11th with the Habs/Sens and Flyers/Bruins. There is only one Stanley Cup Final rematch this year and it goes down on February 3rd 2013

Full schedule here: http://www.nhl.com/ice/schedulebyseason.htm

Bruins Goaltender Tim Thomas to Take a Year Off

38 year old all-star goaltender of the Boston Bruins will be taking the 2012-2013 season off. His contract expires at the end of that year. It looks like he is planning on either retiring, or playing for another team. With this, there have been speculations about who the starting goaltender will be for next year. Biggest bet's on Tuukka Rask who won the Jennings trophy a couple of years ago. Khudobin will most likely be the backup goalie unless they sign a free agent and Campbell is probably going to be the emergency call up.

NHL Award Winners

The winners of the NHL Awards were announced last night. Here are your winners:
Hart Memorial Trophy: Evgeni Malkin

Teemu Selanne Returning?

There are many reports in the main stream media that are confirming the same thing. The 42 year old is back. He scored an amazing 29 goals last season. In his career, he has scored a staggering 633 goals. This is surely a treat to all hockey fans young and old, as they all have something to cheer about together.

Josh Harding Re-Signs

Josh Harding has re-signed with the Minnesota Wild in a 3 year $5.7M contract. The goalie was predicted to be one of the most sought after players in Free Agency if he was to land there. The contract is expected to be worth $1.9M per year.

Erik Karlsson Re-Signs

Senators Star D-Man Erik Karlsson has re-signed with the Ottawa Senators. It will be a 7 Year $45.5 Million Dollar contract. It evens out to approximately $6.5M a year. The Norris finalist lead defenceman in points with 78. Personally, I believe this is a pivotal part of the future and a big worry about making sure he was signed now, was GM Bryan Murray seeing the ugly situation between the LA Kings and Drew Doughty last year.

Lindback Traded.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have gotten their goalie for the future in Andres Lindback. Lindback along with a 7th Round Pick and Kyle Wilson was traded for two 2nd Round Picks, Sebastian Caron, and a 3rd Round Pick. The second round picks come from both Minnesota and Philadelphia.

Quote from Andres Lindback (source: NHL.com): “I’m very excited to now be with the Tampa Bay Lightning. I had some great years with Nashville but I was in a tough spot behind Pekka Rinne. My dream all my life has been to be a number one goalie in the NHL and I think I have a great opportunity to be that in Tampa Bay.”
“I’ve heard great things about the city of Tampa and the Lightning organization. I’m friends with Victor Hedman and he’s told me lots about the team there. I’m thrilled and excited to start next season with the Lightning.”
“It’s going to be great playing on such an offensive team. Obviously, having Steven Stamkos, Vinny and Marty on your team is exciting for anyone. It’s the kind of team I want to be a part of and excited to have this new opportunity ahead of me.”

Winners:
Alson: I think Nashville wins. Even though Tampa gets their goalie, Nashville gets two second round picks. Before the trade, the Preds had zero picks in the first two rounds. Now they have two. Also, they get a backup goalie back with Sebastien Caron. Lastly, Lindback is a RFA. He will be expecting a pay raise from his $875,000 if he is to be the #1 goalie that most people expect him to be.

Kyle: I say Tampa Bay because Tampa Bay finally gets their number one goalie that they crave so bad. Although Lindback is not very proven since he had limited playing time in Nashville, I believe his size will help his career as a number one goalie.

Hiatus

Just a quick note from all the authors. We all have exams in the next week so we're gonna take a break for the next week. We'll be back and better than ever! So just hang on there! But don't be scared, any big news, we'll still be all over it!

Players That Won't Be Back

Jason Blake and Niklas Hagman will not be back next year according to Anaheim Ducks.
Also, Nashville GM David Poile announced today that Andrei Kostitsyn will not return for next year as well. He will be a UFA. This could be big in re-signing start defenceman Ryan Suter.

Brad Stuart Traded

Brad Stuart has been traded from the Detroit Red Wings to the San Jose Sharks. In exchange the Red Wings recieve a conditional pick in 2014.

This is a great move for Stuart as he gets to stay closer with his family on the west coast. I will continue to update you guys with the condition and the round of the picks.

Update:
4:49 To my understanding right now it is Andrew Miller and Condtional 7th Rounder in 2014. I also believe it is the ability to sign him.

Dallas Eakins Re-Signs.

Toronto Marlies Head Coach Dallas Eakins has re-signed on a three year extension. Eakins was considered to be one of the best head coaches available to fill the many vacancies this summer. However, with the extension, many teams will be scrambling to find a new head coach and Eakins will not be available for any of the offers.

Boogaard Given Prescriptions?

The New York Rangers and Minnesota Wild medical teams gave deceased player Derek Boogaard hundreds of prescriptions for thousands of pills according to documents compiled by Boogaard's father Len. According to the Minnesota Star Tribune here are some of the prescriptions (full article here: http://www.startribune.com/sports/wild/156927415.html):

  • In a six-month stretch from October 2008 to April 2009, while playing 51 games, Boogaard received at least 25 prescriptions for the painkillers hydrocodone or oxycodone, a total of 622 pills, from 10 doctors — eight team doctors of the Wild, an oral surgeon in Minneapolis and a doctor for another NHL team.
  • In the fall of 2010, an official for the Rangers, Boogaard's new team, was notified of Boogaard's recurring abuse of narcotic pain pills. Nonetheless, a Rangers team dentist soon wrote the first of five prescriptions for hydrocodone for Boogaard after he sustained an injury.
This is a breaking story: More to come.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded their 2012 7th Round Pick to the Washington Capitals in exchange for the rights of Tomas Vokoun. Right after, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced that they have signed the pending UFA to a 2 year - $4M contract. This is a significant blow to teams looking for goaltending as he was to be one of the best goalie UFA's available.

THOMAS TAKES YEAR OFF.

IT'S OFFICAL. TIM THOMAS HAS ANNOUNCED ON HIS FACEBOOK PAGE THAT HE WILL BE TAKING THE YEAR OFF "TO FOCUS ON FAMILY, FAITH, AND FRIENDS".

THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY. MORE TO COME.

Saturday, June 2, 2012

Tim Thomas taking the year off?

It has been widely reported in the media that Tim Thomas is considering taking the year off next to spend more time with his family. Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli has not refuted these reports and admits that this is a possibility. This could be a significant blow because, even though they have a ready goalie Tukka Rask, Thomas' $5 Million cap hit still applies to the teams' salary cap.

This will be an interesting story that will lead to more discussion...
