Notes Of The Day June 22nd 2012

Just some notes for the day:

  • Tim Thomas has waived his NMC. It was set to expire on July 1st. Teams just on the cap floor may be interested in his services. However, it will not affect his decision on returning.
  • Keith Yandle is in play, and teams such as the New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues are involved, and players like Brandon Dubinsky are being named in return.
  • According to Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: As for Nash trade? Howson said no offers are close. "They have a ways to go yet."
  • Renaud Lavoie of RDS is reporting that the Philadelphia Flyers are trying to move up in the draft. The Anaheim Ducks' 6th overall pick is being named.
  • According to @NHLWiki the Ottawa Senators are now the front runners for Columbus Blue Jackets' Rick Nash with the offering being Ben Bishop, Mika Zibanejad, and Nick Foligno.

Habs Change Official.

Michel Therrien has been officially named as the next head coach for the storied franchise. He has coached the Habs before, but more recently coached the Pittsburgh Penguins until he was replaced by current head coach Dan Bylsma. In corresponding moves, former interm head coach Randy Cunneyworth was relieved of his duties along with assistant head coach Randy Ladouceur.

Habs Personnel News.

In recent developments, it seems that the Habs coaching job will not be going to Patrick Roy as initially thought, but instead to Bob Hartley. The media is abuzz and it seems like an unanimous decision that the next coach of the storied franchise will be Bob Hartley. He is currently coaching the ZSC Lions of the NLA, but he has an out cluase that he can use to leave the team.

It was also made official that former Blues Assistant Coach Scott Mellanby has left the St. Louis Blues organization to join the Habs as Director of Player Personnel.

Lastly, Fred Poulin of the Hockey News is reporting that the Memorial Cup winning Shawinigan Cataractes' head coach Eric Veilleux may be leaving Shawinigan and will join Hartley as an assistant coach of the Habs.

Stay tuned for more.

Rick Dudley Joins Montreal.

Author's note: Sorry for the lack of posting guys, just a little bit under the weather.

It's official. Rick Dudley has joined the Montreal staff as GM Marc Bergevin's right hand man. This was probably the worst kept secret in all of the NHL.We all knew that it was only a matter of time until Dudley joined the Habs staff. The condition is that Dudley may not help the Habs during the draft. How the Leafs can enforce this rule is beyond me. To all the people wondering if the Leafs will get any compensation, the CBA clearly states that the Leafs can not get any compensation.

Wild, Penguins, Canadiens, Red Wings All Interested in Brunner

The Minnesota Wild, Pittsburgh Penguins, Montreal Canadiens, and the Detroit Red Wings are all intersted in Swiss international Damien Brunner. The forward scored 60 points in 45 games for Zug in the NLA. This is eliteprospects.com 's analysis of Brunner,"A slick offensive forward who can shoot as well as pass the puck. Has great wheels and hands. Plays a gritty game. (EP)"

Notes of The Day

  • Michael Farber of SI.com says that Radulov and Kostitsyn broke curfew by one hour and were at Poolside of the W an alcohol free soiree.
  • Darren Dreger of TSN is saying that Habs GM Marc Bergevin has been talking to Leafs GM Brian Burke a lot about getting assistant GM Rick Dudley to join before the draft but Brian Burke is not that big on that idea right now.
  • Semin is gone from the Capitals and even maybe the NHL? Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun is reporting that in the offseason the Caps will not try to resign UFA Alexander Semin.
  • Sports.ru is reporting that Islanders prospect Krill Kabonov will be going to the KHL.
  • Flyers beat writer Sam Charchidi is reporting the Flyers' surgery list is so long it won't be released till next week. (TwoBoredTeens note: That's a little worrisome for fans.)

Conflict In Montreal Already?

There may already be more conflict in Montreal. There are reports out of CBC saying that Habs GM Marc Bergevin would like to make the Canadiens the new Blackhawks. He would like to bring Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville along to the Candiens organization. However, owner Geoff Molson does not agree and would prefer Patrick Roy. A major factor in this is that Joel Quenneville does not speak very well French and would much prefer a coach that speaks French.

More to come.

Rick Dudley moving to Montreal?

There are reports that Habs GM Marc Bergevin is in talks with Leafs GM Brian Burke about moving Leafs Assistant GM Rick Dudley to the Habs. The Leafs prefer that Dudley stay on till after the draft instead of before the draft. To the Leafs fans, don't expect anything in return. The NHL does not allow compensation for front office personnel leaving for other teams.

More to come.
Updates:
2:21 @JoshRimerHockey is reporting that Rick Dudley will be named Asst. GM of the Montreal Canadiens tomorrow.
6:27 @HockeyInsiderr is reporting that Dudley will be named AFTER the draft...
The general consensus i'm getting is that Dudley will be moving to the Habs.

Patrick Roy, Guy Carbonneau or Michel Therrien?

Patrick Roy will be meeting with GM Marc Bergevin and Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations Serge Savard before Monday and unless something major happens, expect him to become the coach. If something does go wrong, the next two candidates for the job, is former Penguins coach Michel Therrien and Chicoutimi Sagueneens President Guy Carbonneau. Both of them have had experience being the head coach of the Habs with Therrien being the coach from 2001-2003 and Carbonneau being the head coach from 2006-2009.

To sum it up, if all goes down correctly, Roy will be the next coach. If it fails, Therrien will be the second choice, and Carbonneau the third choice. Right now, any anglophone coach is being disregarded because GM Bergevin would prefer a French speaking coach.

Do you think these coaches are the right choices? Comment Below!

BREAKING: SCOTT GOMEZ TO BE BOUGHT OUT?

Scott Gomez may be bought out in the near future. However, there are contrary reports coming from very reputable people in the media. Sportsnet's Louis Jean reports that the decision has been made to buy him out, but TSN's Bob McKenzie is also saying that "is the dumbest thing any organization could possibly do in a salary cap world." His current contract is $7,357,143 for two more years, but if he does get bought out, it will cost the Canadiens $3,523,810 for the first year, $4,523,810 the second year, and $1,666,667 for two final years. Do not expect any news to come out in the next little while. The earliest any buyout that can happen is 6/15 because that's when his buyout window in his contract comes in.

BREAKING HABS SIGN GM.

Marc Bergevin has been announced as the new GM. He was the Assistant GM of the Chicago Blackhawks. He has experience and should adapt fine in the new team. It was rumored last night the only participants left in the race was ESPN's Pierre McGuire and Bregevin. He is expected to be officially announced in the near future.

On the coaching side, it seems like a matter of time before Patrick Roy is announced as head coach. It's a wait and see but it seems like he is the only one in the race still.

Updates:
The current coach Randy Cunneyworth will remain with the team as an assistant coach and it will be up to the new coach to decide.

NHL Tampering, Award Finalists, Luongo Trade Rumors, and More!

Quick Notes from the day:

  • Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo has told reporters that he will waive a NTC if the right situation comes.
    • There are reports from multiple people that he has submitted a list with teams he would be willing to waive his NTC for. There are also reports that this list does not exist.
    • @Aportzline is saying that the Blue Jackets may be interested in Luongo, but his monster deal is making him a last ditch resort.
      • His contract: $5.33 Million cap hit all the way to 2021-2022 and his clause is as follows, NTC (player can supply five-team trade list following final game of 2013-14, valid through July 15, 2014; if player does not submit trade list at that time, team can request a five-team trade list following final game of 2017-18 season, valid through Sept. 1, 2018). If player submitted a trade list in 2014 and was not moved, team loses right to request trade list in 2018. (Source: Capgeek.com)
  • Ray Shero is not sure he can re-sign both Jordan Staal and Sidney Crosby and feels that the CBA and their willingness to stay will be a determining factor if they can be re-signed. He also gave a vote of confidence to coach Dan Bylsma saying  “I think Dan Bylsma is the right coach for our team”.
  • @dchesnokov reports that Leafs' Mikhail Grabovski gave an interview to goals.by saying that there was another offer besides the offer from the Leafs he eventually accepted.
    • We are pretty sure that the offer did not come from an NHL team due to the tampering rules in place. Our only explanation is it is from a KHL team.
      • @dchesnokov is reporting maybe Minsk? or he said too much....
  • Bill Masterton Finalists:
    • D.Alfredsson (OTT)
    • J. Lupul (TOR)
    • M. Pacioretty (MTL)
  • GM of The Year Finalists:
    • D. Armstrong (STL)
    • D. Poile (NSH)
    • D. Tallon (FLA)

Patrick Roy as the Next Head Coach Of The Habs

The Quebec Remparts and Patrick Roy have announced a press confrence tomorrow for season's end. With the Remparts out of the QMJHL playoffs, Patrick Roy could be installed as the head coach of the Habs as early as next week. Keep it here as we will have more news as it comes out.

Just a few quick notes and news from the afternoon

  • Carey Price has been diagnosed with a "mild" concussion. This may be something to be worried about as this may lead to a James Reimer like performance, with him coming back and being unable to maintain his production before his injury. Not to scare Habs fans but don't forget, Nathan Horton has been out with a "mild" concussion since Feburary.
  • Tyler Myers will be out for at least the rest of the regular season with a foot injury. We don't know about the playoffs.
  • Carl Gunnarson has a seperated shoulder and will be out for the year.
  • P.A. Parentau's agent hassaid that he has recieved zero offers to keep his client in Long Island.
  • The most sought after college player right now D Justin Schultz has not decided and will probably try the UFA market this year.
  • Calgary is not interested in a "Edmonton-like" rebuild.

Julien Brisebois and Vincent Damphousse Isn't Interested In Habs GM Position

Talks out of Montreal's RDS are saying that once preferred Habs GM candidate Julien Brisebois is no longer interested in the GM job. The assistant GM of the Tampa Bay Lightning would have passed on the offer if he was offered the job of being the next General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens. With Brisebois out of the picture, the next top candidate is apparently Vincent Damphousse. No word on the coach right now except for maybe Patrick Roy.

However, I feel that this situation will be cleared up before the Draft and latest June 27th. I feel that whoever the new GM is, he would prefer to draft his own players instead of spending a year. The June 27th deadline is the latest I think any GM would want to go because on July 1st free agency starts and before free agent frenzy starts, most GMs would want a few days to settle down. However, with the chance of a lockout looming, this can change in an instant.

Update:
3:33 What I'm hearing right now from around the league is that Geoff Molson has contacted the following:
Claude Loiselle: Toronto Maple Leafs Assistant GM (Apparently the Leafs have granted the Habs permission to talk to him about the job.)
Pat Brisson: NHL Agent. His clients include Sidney Crosby, Daniel Alfredsson, and Claude Giroux. (Considered by many as the best agent available out there by many of the hockey insiders we spoke to.)
Julien Brisebois: Assistant GM of the Tampa Bay Lightning (Apparently not intersted though)
Marc Bergevin: Assistant GM of the Chicago Blackhawks. (Not too sure if the Blackhawks have granted permission to talk to him yet.)
Francois Giguere: Former GM of the Colorado Avalanche. (Is the apparent long shot because he has not been in the front office of any team for a few years now.)
Paul Fenton: Fenton is the Assistant GM of the Nashville Predators. (Not sure if the Predators have granted permission to talk to him yet.

3:43
Notables not on the list:
Patrick Roy: Even though he has been rumored for the job, it seems that the coaching job is his to lose and infact he does not seem to intersted to step in to the front office of the Habs, preffering a job behind the bench.
Vincent Damphousse: He has pulled out of the running for the job because family reasons are preventin him. Not too much known right now. But we will try to get you information as we get it, but we really can't give you a specific date or time when we will get new info.

4:02
@NHLWiki is saying that the reason why Damphousse has pulled out of the running is that he has an assualt trial that will start in Dec. 2012. I haven't gotten the same story from anyone else though, so i'm not too sure at this time.

Andrei Markov Injury Status.

We've seen a lot of searches recently about whether Habs D-Man Andrei Markov is injured or not.
Habs fans rejoice! He is not injured. He has been playing on the Habs patrolling the back end. He has been slowly being added back into the line up with 17 minutes on the ice on the 24th, to almost 22 minutes on the ice yesterday. So Habs fans don't worry, Markov is back!

HABS GM/COACH UPDATE.

There is rumors and murmurs out of Montreal tonight that Patrick Roy has agreed in principal and with a verbal agreement with Habs president Geoff Molson to become the 28th head coach of the storied franchise. We can't independently confirm this ,but his name has been thrown out a lot and Roy himself has said that he would be interested in this job.

This is even more far fetched but like we said, we try to give you the rumors and murmurs that seem the most right and logical. There's talk out of Toronto and Montreal that there could be an interesting duo of Brisebois and Damphousse as the next GM and Assistant GM combo. For our French readers, we have a clip of Damphousse saying he would be interested in the job. http://www.rds.ca/zone-video/video.html?from=tw&cat=-&videoID=108139 Brisebois has been the favorite so far as the next GM and it could be something to keep an eye on.

We will have updates as they come.

Habs GM replacement.

There's lots of talk about about who will be the replacement for Habs GM Pierre Gauthier. He has been fired by the Montreal Canadiens

There "celebrity" choice is P. Roy, but I personally don't think this is a great idea because when he was a coach in the QMJHL he got in a fight with his son giving the crowd a two middle finger salute.

However, the "executive" choice right now is Francois Giguere. Giguere was the GM and Executive Vice President of the Colorado Avalanche from 2006 - 2009.

We will have updates for you when we get them.

Updates:
7:30 New candidates. Julien Brisebois is a new candidate that has emerged for the job. He is the current Assistant GM of the Tampa Bay Lightning. If the team wants him, they will need to talk to the Lightning for permission to pursue him.
Another candidate is Vincent Damphousse. He does not have any experience working in the front office but he has lots of experience working with players. Currently, Geoff Molson is more interested in hiring Damphousse over Brisebois.

7:57 Long shot would be Guy Lafleur. Not sure if he has any front office experience ,but he would please the fan base with his status.
Like always Pierre McGuire is an option. Not too sure he would want to go to MTL though...

NEW HABS GM AND COACH BY NEXT YEAR?

Reports out of Montreal press and Ex- NHL Executive Shawn Simpson's sources have said Patrick Roy will be next Habs GM and Bob Hartley coach. A quick note is that both of them are francophones. Roy and Hartley both speak french as a first language, an important factor to some of the fans.

What do you think? Good choice? COMMENT BELOW!

Andrei Markov injured once again.

Multiple reports have said that Montreal Canadiens' defensemen Andrei Markov is out once again. Habs fans don't panic yet though. He is not out with a knee injury, but with an "upper body injury". We will give you updates as we get them.

He has played 3 games this season, registering four shots and one assist. Do the Habs fan feel annoyed about his durability? Or do they feel that it's something out of his control? COMMENT BELOW!
